Monica Bowie - Assertive and Resourceful

What are your “and” words and why? Assertive & Resourceful - I am not a stranger to leading but can also assume a position of strategy for others’ talents to come to the forefront. I think the best leaders enable others to rise to their best selves, while being assertive in helping others get out of their comfort zones to have this take place.

What you are known for saying / a quote from you. What does this quote mean to you, (or if it’s from someone else, why does it inspire you)? "I've never seen a butterfly that wished it could still crawl." This is a quote I made when I was writing my 1st book to remind me that growing is more beautiful than what you leave behind. Often times we see only the current state. It can be uncomfortable, seemingly stagnant, but one day we bloom into something we never knew was possible, like a butterfly and we wouldn’t dare wish that we could crawl again!!

Which other Ladybadasses inspire you and why? Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Ava Duvernay - these ladies are unapologetic Ladybadasses who go after what they want and lead in their respective fields. Each one teaches me a different amount of grace and tenacity. They are powerhouses and leaders for all of us.

When did you first realize that you had some Ladybadassery in you? The first time was when I trained for and completed my first full 26.2 mile marathon. I was a first time runner and had never completed a race in my life. The body can literally accomplish anything you tell it to and with the proper training and encouragement from friends, I pushed myself further than I ever knew was possible. The second time was when I went to grad school. I became this unstoppable force of education and innovation surrounded by peers who were like-minded. I did all of this while working a full-time 9 to 5 that was often demanding of my time beyond 5. This gave me another level of resilience and confidence that I can do anything I set my mind to.

What keeps you motivated on days when you aren't quite feeling like a Ladybadass? Morning devotions or meditation help me to start my day centered. On mornings when I wake up with a lot on my mind, I journal dump. Getting all your thoughts out on paper does wonders to helping you figure out what to focus on first.

What is your advice to other women who are trying to tap into their Ladybadassery? Do one thing you don't think is possible. Just one. Run a marathon, lose the weight, write the book, speak in front of thousands. Once you accomplish that, you will find a level of confidence and the momentum to go after the next goal . You will find that your drive was within you all along and you will go for more. Just keep setting the bar higher, accomplishing one task after another, but start with the first one. Do it now! What are you waiting for?!
