Lia Ditton - Daring and Caring

What are your “and” words and why? Daring and caring. I am bold and willing to take risks, but I've always weighed up the impact (environmental, existential and on others) of my daring-do.

What you are known for saying / a quote from you. What does this quote mean to you, (or if it’s from someone else, why does it inspire you)? “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now!" - attributed to the German poet Goethe. I discovered this quote on a postcard on a trip to Amsterdam when I was 17. I've clung to it as reason to act ever since. 

“Patience and persistence and you are bound to be successful. Bound to be successful.' - Swami Vivekanada, a phrase reiterated 10x per day for 10 days during the Vipassana meditation course I did aged 21. 

Which other Ladybadasses inspire you and why? Serena Williams for her strength and for championing equality. Amelia Earhart for defying conventional feminine behaviour. My grandmother who died at 100.5 for her inextinguishable positive attitude towards life: "It's not what you do with your life, it's the story you tell of your life."

When did you first realize that you had some Ladybadassery in you? When I packed one change of clothes, a mosquito net and the Lonely Planet and flew to India alone aged 20. I wanted to shed the child I had been. It was a coming-of-age strike out into the world. No one - my parents included- thought I would go through with that trip to India. At the time, I called pepper a spice! I read the guide books, got the injections, sought advice and off I went in search of beauty and the wonders of the world. My 6 months in India took everything I knew about life (time, order, cleanliness, health, poverty, food) and repeatedly dumped them on it's head. One by one, I weathered the challenges.

What keeps you motivated on days when you aren't quite feeling like a Ladybadass? Chocolate and knowing that there are people who believe in me. 

What is your advice to other women who are trying to tap into their Ladybadassery? You are more beautiful, capable and strong than you will ever know. Go and find that out for yourself. Jump.
