Joanna Kyriazakos - Fierce and Kind
Joanna Kyriazakos is a #ladybadass with an ability to push people past their comfort zone and help them achieve more than they thought possible. I credit coach Joanna with encouraging me to overcome my (many physical and mental) fears so that I am now a confident stand-up paddleboarder in Sydney harbor.
Joanna is fearless! She has a love for physical challenges and for helping people of all ages find their love of the ocean through nurturing and teaching them various skills, whether it be swimming, stand up paddling or surf swimming.
“Saltwater is my elixir. It maintains my physical, mental and psychological well-being. I love that I can combine two of my greatest passions; one being in the ocean and the other making a difference in people’s lives.”
Joanna graduated from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with a combined Bachelor of Arts and Law degrees. After practicing Commercial Law for three years she did a complete 180 turn and decided that the corporate world wasn’t for her. She wanted to pursue what made her happy, which was teaching and sharing her passion for being active in and around the saltwater. Fifteen years ago Mermaid Jo was (re)born and she has been teaching people to swim at the Bondi Icebergs Pool and in the surf at Bondi Beach ever since.
Joanna has competed and placed in many titles including Australian Masters Iron Woman Bronze medallist and Molokai to Oahu Women’s Team Prone Champion 2008 (a 52 km paddle!). She has applied her business focus to all three of her ocean orientated businesses: Mermaid Swim Academy (children’s saltwater swim school), Salty Fit (adult ocean swim coaching) and Watsons Bay Stand Up Paddling (a stand up paddling school).
